Transcending The Techno-Self

Cellphones. Ipods. Cyberspatial reveries. Beta waves flying and floundering in the neural matrix. The high-tech, ADHD-afflicted state of the Western Mind feeds off these things for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Because most minds are subordinate to the Western Mind, it means that “most minds” are unconsciously and consciously trained to play fetch in the rapid-fire pace of the postmodern Technosphere. What could this ultimately mean? It could ultimately mean that we’re riding on the crest of a wave that is bound to crash on a less than desirable shore. The shore would be less than desirable because the Western Mind—or for that matter, the “Techno-complex” inside of us all—is an incomplete idea, a puzzle that is missing integral parts of itself. Arguably, the quest we must attend to now involves finding the missing pieces before the whole thing goes up in smoke.

In order to survive the next century, we as sentient beings need to create an inner phoenix that is capable of rising from the ashes of the historical process. This means that we must rely upon the alchemical art of purification as opposed to strictly relying upon the caprice of technology and other cursory pleasures. If the alchemical process is not heeded to and if we make no attempts to wrestle the raging, egoic bull within us, then I am afraid that the incomplete Western Mind and all the parts that make up this Western Mind will eventually transform the planet into what the Mayan scholar Jose Arguelles calls the “Necrosphere”. The Necrosphere would turn all of us into alienated zombies, fallen beings lost in the labyrinth of a world on the brink of death and pestilence. If this seems impossible and fantastical, let me assure you that it is not. Entropy is the master of any species that hasn’t been able to rise above the limitations it imposes upon itself. Arguably, the primary limitation that our species grapples with is the historical process itself, which is nothing other than a cloak placed over the psychic and spiritual faculties all beings have at their disposal. So, in a nutshell, we must end the historical process by finding those “puzzle pieces” where the angels fear to tread.

One way to end the historical process involves opening the Heart-Eye, an intelligence that resides in the heart region of the body. Maverick scientists are now telling us that the heart is not just a pump. They are telling us that the heart is a mediator for the indeterminable energy fields that sustain all lifeforms. They are even telling us that the heart contains neurons, fickle electrical tendrils that create self-awareness and perception in all organisms. This is a tremendous discovery, and certainly it goes to show you that Love, Compassion, and all the revered emotions of the human condition aren’t just words we use to escape from our fragile state. These revered emotions actually have a biological component that innately connects us with the universal field where all the playful potentials of existence frolic and dance. We actually have a “Heart-Eye,” an eye that sees the Truth beyond the constraints of hindsight and foresight. How utterly amazing!

We must go forward with optimism in our hearts, we must peel off the scientific and religious notions that leech on our better judgment, and we must cultivate the inner art of boundless creativity and infinite love. Only then will the historical process end, and only then will the curtain that separates us from the eternal moment be lifted.
